Stoneware pottery luminary for use with candles or string lighting
Hand building process
The clay for the luminary is hand rolled from grey stoneware clay. Once it has reached a semi-plastic state it is attached to the base and depending upon the height of the luminary, layers are attached until the desired height is reached. Once, the clay is leather hard, shapes are cut out in the luminary to allow light to shine through, once lit. The clay is then dried for around a week before the bisque firing, which is to around 1000 degrees. After cooling, the luminaries are glazed on the interior then fired to above 1200 degrees depending upon the glaze used.
Whilst every attention is made in refining the luminaries, they will be subject to irregularities in shape – each one is unique! The process takes around than 2 weeks to complete – this allows for the hand rolling of each luminary, drying before the first firing, glazing and then final firing and cooling.
The price is for one luminary handmade in my studio in the Surrey Hills
